The Texas Rangers have extended the contract of 2nd baseman Rougned Odor. It is a six-year extension worth $49.5 million. What kind of deal is this for the Rangers?
Odor is entering his 4th Major League Baseball season all with the Texas Rangers. At the plate his numbers aren’t impressive. He hits .265 with 58 home runs and 197 RBI’s. Odor has only hit more than 20 home runs in a season once in his career and that was last season when his total was 33. When he is on base, Odor is a threat to steal bases to get into scoring position. He has stolen 24 bases in his career.
Fielding wise, Odor is able to field the ball and throw runners out at first base with a total of 1,053 infield assists. Odor can also start a double play. He has a total of 296 double plays.
Odor is a decent fielder, but his problem is errors. He made a total of 22 errors last season. He is lucky those errors didn’t cost the Rangers a playoff spot. In three years at the Major League level he’s made 48 errors, far too many for a 2nd baseman.
The Rangers shouldn’t have given Odor this contract extension right now. He has not earned it. The Rangers needed to wait until the end of the year to see if his play improved. If it did, then give him this contract.
The Rangers felt that Odor, at age 23, is the centerpiece of their lineup for years to come. The Rangers are taking a risk by throwing that much money at him because he could get hurt or his play might decline. Hopefully for the Rangers, Odor will prove that he is worth the contract.
What do you think of the Rangers giving Rougned Odor such a large contract extension?
