The Miami Dolphins are taking a huge risk. They signed running back Arian Foster to a one-year deal. His base salary is $1.5 million but could be worth $3.5 million with incentives.
Miami had a major void to fill after Lamar Miller, who led the Dolphins with 872 rushing yards last year, decided to sign with the Houston Texans. That left Jay Ajayi, who ran for only 187 yards last season, and rookie Kenyan Drake as the top two running backs on the team. They needed a skilled running back on the roster and felt Foster was the best running back left in free agency.
Arian Foster is an experienced running back with 8 NFL seasons, rushing for a total of 6,472 yards. Foster’s average rush per carry is an impressive 4.5 yards. He’s scored 54 touchdowns on the ground. Foster can also catch the ball with 349 receptions for 2,268 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Dolphins will have a decent running back on the roster. According to ESPN, Foster said, “They’re a young team, a hungry team. They have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. I think they have the right head coach and the right people in the front office. They’re all committed to winning there.”
I believe that Foster is a respectable running back. He can block for the quarterback on passing plays, run the football, and catch passes in the open field. This is everything a team looks for in a running back. Head Coach Adam Gase is lucky to have a running back on the roster who knows how to play the position.
The biggest question mark for me is how healthy is Foster. In his 8 years in the NFL, only twice has he appeared in all 16 games, 2010 and 2012. Last season he played in 4 games because he ruptured his Achilles tendon in week seven. If Foster is healthy, he can be one of the best running backs in the game and help this team win games. He can also protect Ryan Tannehill from getting sacked. If Foster stays on the sidelines it is a wasted signing.
The Dolphins are taking a big gamble. I hope it works out for them because Foster can be a 1,000-yard rusher in the Adam Gase offense. Those yards could be the difference in a Dolphins’ win.
