The Chicago Bears are off to their worst start in recent memory at 0-3. Chicago traded some of their best players this week. They dealt defensive end Jared Allen to the Carolina Panthers for Carolina’s sixth-round draft pick. They also sent linebacker Jonathan Bostic to the New England Patriots for another sixth-round selection. Rumors are now swirling that the Bears could trade quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte. The Denver Broncos have interest in acquiring Matt Forte. Forte’s contract is up at the end of the year. Should Denver really give up a draft pick for him?
Matt Forte is in his eighth year in the NFL. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second-round and 44th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has run for a total of 7,980 yards and 42 touchdowns with an impressive 4.3 yards per rush in his career. Forte has five seasons of 1,000 yards rushing. His best season was in 2013 when he rushed for 1,339 yards. Besides the fact Forte can run the ball, he can catch passes in the open field. He has 452 receptions for 3,796 yards and 16 touchdowns. Forte’s average yards per catch is 8.4 yards.
This year Forte is off to another respectable start rushing for 276 yards and one touchdown. That ranks second in the NFL. His average per rush is 4.7. The Bears are rebuilding with new Head Coach John Fox.
The Denver Broncos are attracted to Matt Forte because he would help their running game. In the first three games of the season, Denver is 31st in rushing yards, averaging 57 yards per game. Denver would be an ideal landing spot for Forte. The Bears aren’t going anywhere and won’t make the playoffs while Denver is a playoff team.
The problem with Denver is they already have a loaded backfield with C.J. Anderson, Ronnie Hillman, and Juwan Thompson. If Denver acquired him, they would have to release one of their talented running backs or let go another player on the roster. They also have a young offensive line that hasn’t been able to generate a hole for a running back to gain yards.
The Broncos should at least place a phone call to the Bears to see what they want for Matt Forte. The Broncos need help in the backfield. Forte is a veteran running back who could help. If the Broncos want to upgrade they should send a fifth or sixth-round pick. Forte would assist this team in not only the regular season, but also in the playoffs. If they don’t make a trade for him, they could sign him in the offseason as a free agent.
What do you think of the Denver Broncos possibly making a trade for Matt Forte?
