Ryan Siblings Teaming Up In Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills ended this season 8-8. On Monday, Head Coach Rex Ryan decided to hire his brother Rob Ryan. Rob will be an assistant Head Coach for defense. This comes after Rob Ryan was fired by the New Orleans Saints as defensive coordinator in November. What kind of move is this for the Buffalo Bills?

According to ABC.com Rex Ryan said, “I’m excited to have Rob join our staff, and I think he will be a great asset for our defense. He has a tremendous working knowledge of our schemes, and I look forward to his input.” The Bills are familiar with Rob Ryan. He spent one week in December helping the Bills prepare for their football game against the Eagles. ESPN states that Bills Linebacker Preston Brown said “It was great to have him out there. It was kind of weird because they have the exact same voice. So you kind of hear somebody talking, and you think it’s [Rex], but it’s his brother. So it’s cool having another great mind out there to help us get through the week.”

The Buffalo Bills defense was mediocre this year. They gave up 22.4 points and 356.4 yards per game. The area they struggled in was defensive sacks with only 21. That was 31st in the league, only the Atlanta Falcons had less. The defense must sack the quarterback more often next year. That could be the difference in field position for their offense.

Rob Ryan’s experience should assist this team in becoming better on defense. Rob Ryan spent 17 years in the NFL as a coach. He was the linebackers coach of the New England Patriots from 2000 to 2003. Rob Ryan has been the defensive coordinator with Oakland, Cleveland, Dallas, and New Orleans. It will be up to the Bills next season if they learn to use what Rob Ryan is teaching them. The move seems like it will enhance the Bills defense but time will only tell.

What do you think of Rob Ryan joining the Buffalo Bills?
