The Seattle Seahawks are exploring a trade for cornerback Richard Sherman in hopes of salary cap relief for the upcoming season. This could be a big loss for the Seattle secondary since he is the leader of the defense.
Seattle is the only team Sherman has played for in his 7 years in the NFL. During that time, he established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the game. Opposing quarterbacks couldn’t throw Sherman’s way without the fear of an interception or the ball being tipped. He rarely misses a tackle in the open field. Sherman has picked the ball off 32 times and returned them for 2 touchdowns. He is also able to force fumbles with a total of 5.
Sherman had a down year last season starting in 9 games. He ruptured his Achilles which shut him down for the final 7 games. Sherman was still productive even though he had a career low of 2 interceptions.
Sherman would improve a team’s secondary and might be the difference in a post season run. The difficulty dealing Sherman is his salary. He is owed $11 million and his cap hit is $13.2 million, a lot for a team to take on. Teams may want him to restructure it so the cap hit isn’t as large.
There will be plenty of teams interested in acquiring Sherman because of his ability to play. It may take a 2nd or a 3rd round pick and might only be 1 year since his contract is up after 2018.
Seattle might have to wait and see what his value is. If they like what they hear, then deal him. He was a big part of their defense. They will need to fill the void in free agency or the draft.
What do you think of Seattle possibly trading Richard Sherman for the upcoming season?
