The NBA regular season MVP was named earlier this week. Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry won the award over James Harden and LeBron James. Curry received 100 first place votes. Was this the right guy for MVP?
Curry was one of the best Warriors players this year. He helped guide them to a record of 67-15. This year he averaged 23.8 points, 7.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. Curry was the top three-point shooter this year, breaking his own three-point record. He made 286 three’s. He had a decent regular season but he didn’t deserve the MVP. If Steph Curry wasn’t on the Warriors, they still would have won at least 55 games and been a top three seed in the playoffs because of the talent on their team. They have Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, and Harrison Barnes.
The athlete who might have won the MVP had his team made the playoffs was Russell Westbrook. Oklahoma City was 45-37. They had the same record as the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans made the playoffs as the 8th seed in the West because they had the tiebreaker over the Thunder. They won the season series 2 games to 1. It was an impressive year for Russell Westbrook. He averaged 28.1 points and 8.6 assists per game. He had to play all but 27 games without the Thunder’s best player, Kevin Durant, and he almost led them to the playoffs.
The player who deserved the MVP was James Harden. Harden averaged 27.4 points per game. He was the main offense for Houston. Harden kept the Rockets as the second seed in the Western Conference. They missed Dwight Howard for half the season. With Harden they ended up with a record of 56-26. If
Harden wasn’t on this team, they would have been lucky to win 50 games.
According to ESPN, Harden was disappointed but knows he wants to lead this team far in the playoffs. He said, “That’s tough, but we’re in the second round of the playoffs, and I got better things to worry about and that’s the Clippers. The Warriors are a very good team that’s rolling right now and it didn’t work out, but there’s more of the season to continue to play.” Dwight Howard was also upset that Harden didn’t win the award and said, “All of us are pretty upset he didn’t win, but our goal is to win the championship.”
LeBron James was third in the MVP voting, but he wasn’t disappointed that he didn’t win. He thought that Curry earned it. James said, “Disappointed? No, I’m not disappointed. I think it’s well deserved. I mean, you see, first of all, the team success, that’s the first thing that pops out.”
Who do you think should have won NBA regular season MVP?
