The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks baseball team (Grand Junction, Colorado) has not lost a step this season. Last year, they went all the way to the final game of the NCAA Division 2, College World Series and lost to Southern Indiana 3-2 in 12 innings. Going into this year they lost several seniors who played significant time for the Mavs. The question for them was how were they going to respond this year after the success last year?
They responded well and opened the year ranked #3 in the Division 2 baseball rankings. Their record through seven games was 5-2. Ever since they hit Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play they have been unbeatable. In conference play so far they haven’t lost a game, going 16-0. They swept Colorado Christian, Metro State, Colorado School Of Mines, and this past weekend New Mexico Highlands.
The Mavs home ballpark has been friendly this year. They have a record of 15-1 playing at Sam Suplizio Field. Road games haven’t been much trouble with a record of 9-1.
With all this success the team is ranked #1, in the Division 2 baseball rankings for the first time in school history. They achieved an outstanding winning streak of 19 in a row. This is now a new school record. The Mavs are well on their way to returning back to the Division 2, World Series if they can continue their winning ways.
One of the reasons they are having such early success is hitting. They are averaging as a team .357 which is second in the RMAC to CSU-Pueblo and lead the conference in homeruns with 19. Pitching has also been a strong spot for them. As a team, starting pitchers have gone 24-2 with an ERA of 3.42. It’s no wonder the Mavs are as good as they are. Quality starting pitching has helped to this point. They are hitting the ball for base hits and are scoring runs.
This weekend the Mavs are on the road for a four game set in Alamosa to take on Adams State. The first game is on Friday, followed by a double-header on Saturday and the final game of the series on Sunday. The Mavs look for more road success to keep their winning streak going.
Hurray for the Maveriks. Colorado deserves a winning team having to put up with the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche.
