“The Fight Of The Century” Disappoints Fans

Floyd Mayweather won “The Fight Of The Century” over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday. The fight went all 12 rounds with the judges deciding who won. All three judges scored it in favor of Mayweather in a unanimous decision. Judge Dave Moretti scored it 118-100, Glenn Feldman and Burt Clements both had it at 116-112 for Mayweather. With the win, Floyd Mayweather is now 48-0. Was this really a decent fight to watch?

There was so much hype for this fight. Mayweather and Pacquiao had been in talks for this fight for five-years preceding it. Boxing fans were excited that it was finally going to happen. Most were hoping that Pacquiao would end Mayweather streak of 47 wins. The fight was delayed for 45 minutes because so many people ordered it on Pay-Per-View it was overloaded.

The mega bout didn’t live up to expectations. According to ESPN, Mayweather threw 435 punches, 148 landed on Manny Pacquiao. That’s a 34% punch rate. Pacquiao tried to go for the knockout on Mayweather as he sending 429 punches, but only landed 81 of those for a 19% punch rate. The 429 punches thrown by Pacquiao was the lowest of his career since 2009. His lowest total before that was when he fought Timothy Bradley in 2014 when he had 563 punches thrown.

The problem with the fight is that Mayweather plays a defensive style of boxing. He waits for his opportunities. That is exactly what happened. He let Pacquiao dictate the clash until he landed punches. Neither fighter had any knockdowns or cuts. Overall it wasn’t exciting to watch.

When the result was in favor of Mayweather, Pacquiao thought he won the fight. According to ESPN he said, “It’s a good fight. I thought I won the fight. He didn’t do anything. He moved outside. I got him many more times with a lot of punches, and I thought I won the fight; I was never hurt. I was very surprised at the scores.” He thought he had won because he connected more but he didn’t. In the end Mayweather deserved the win.

The Media members is already talking about a rematch. Fans don’t want to see a rematch of this clash since nothing happened in this fight. Both fighters landed some punches but that was about it. It wasn’t worth the Pay-Per-View price of a $100. There won’t be a rematch. Mayweather has one more fight left on his ShowTime deal and it looks like it won’t be with Pacquiao. Once his deal is over he may retire if he is undefeated.

Should there be a rematch of the “The Fight Of The Century?”
