The Final Countdown For The Houston Texans’ Head Coaching Job

By Jordan Long

The Houston Texans are the final team in the NFL without a Head Coach.  They have been interviewing candidates since the regular season ended.  Their job has been open since they fired Bill O’Brien 4 games into the year.  They granted second interviews to Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Jim Caldwell, and Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach David Culley.  One of them could be the next Head Coach for the Houston Texans.

It would make sense for the Texans to hire somebody with head coaching experience in the NFL.  Frazier and Caldwell both bring that to the table.  Frazier was the Head Coach for the Minnesota Vikings from the end of 2010 to 2013.  The Vikings didn’t play that well under Frazier with a record of 21-32-1, a winning percentage of   .398.  They managed 1 playoff appearance, 2012, but were knocked off in the Wild Card Round.

Frazier hasn’t been a Head Coach since.  This could be his opportunity to show what he learned the first time around.  Frazier is a different coach than O’Brien.   O’Brien was an offensive minded coach.  Frazier is a defensive coach and he may help the Texans’ defense be improved from last year.

Caldwell is the better choice over Frazier.  He was the Head Coach for the Detroit Lions and the Indianapolis Colts.  He is an offensive minded coach.  It helped that when he coached in Indianapolis he had one of the top quarterbacks to ever play the game in Peyton Manning.  Manning made Caldwell’s job easier because he would read the defenses and put the Colts in the best formation to gain yards.

Caldwell’s overall Head Coaching record is 62-50.  His teams advanced to the postseason 4 times.  The furthest he went was the Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts.  They were knocked off by the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl 44.  If the Texans want a coach who could take them to the next level, Caldwell is the coach they need.  In their history, the Texans haven’t advanced past the Divisional Round.  Caldwell might be able to help them make a run at a Super Bowl, even though it would take a few years.

Culley is also an offensive minded coach.  He is currently the wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens.  The only problem with Culley is he has never been a Head Coach.  It could be too much responsibility for him.

The Texans will do what is best for the franchise taking their time to hire their next Head Coach.  The goal is to win the Super Bowl.  Caldwell and Frazier might be the coaches to take them there.  It may help convince quarterback Deshaun Watson to stay in Houston.
