The Los Angeles Angels finished the season at a disappointing 73-89, missing the playoffs. This is the 9th year in a row that there won’t be October baseball for the Angels. They have decided to move on from Manager Phil Nevin.
Nevin was named manager of the Angels on June 7th, 2022. This was after Los Angeles fired Joe Maddon following a 27-29 start to the 2022 season. Maddon had been with Los Angeles since 2020. His record was 157-172. Los Angeles didn’t earn a playoff spot with Maddon as manager. The Angels hoped a switch to Nevin would change the year.
Nevin managed the Angels to a 46-60 finish. Their final record in 2022 ended at 73-89. Los Angeles knew they needed to give Nevin a full season. Unfortunately, the Angels went 73-89. It didn’t seem the team was improving under Nevin and it was best to move on.
According to ESPN.com, Nevin said, “I know it didn’t go the way we wanted, but I’m proud of the way that room held together. It wasn’t fun. It’s not fun ending the way we did, but it’s a great group in there. There’s a lot of great things that are on the horizon here with the young players and the guys coming back. Good future.”
It doesn’t seem like Nevin had a fair chance to manage this ball club. This was his first full season as their manager. Los Angeles should have given him another year. The Los Angeles Angels front office must have seen enough to let him go.
The Los Angeles Angels are now searching for a new manager for the 4th time since 2018, not a good track record. Whoever the next manager is could be faced with rebuilding this franchise. Los Angeles’s two best players may not be back. Shohei Ohtani is a free agent and could sign with a different team in hopes of helping them go deep into the playoffs. Mike Trout may be traded. It may take a while for this team to be a winner once again. That is a tall task. Los Angeles must be more patient with the next manager. Results won’t come easily.
