The Colorado Rockies just ended a 4-game set with the New York Mets on the road. Colorado dropped 3 of the 4 games. They are now 19-32 overall and their road record is a dismal 3-20 away from Coors Field, the worst in Major League Baseball. They will continue their road trip, taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 3-game set starting tomorrow before heading home to take on the Texas Rangers. The series against the Rangers begins on Tuesday. More than likely, Colorado will miss the MLB postseason for the 2nd year in a row. They sit 13 games back of the Padres for 1st place in the National League West Division and 11.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. It is time for Colorado to trade shortstop Trevor Story.
Story is one of the top names for the Rockies this year. He is one of their better hitters and fielders. Story is hitting .255 with 5 home runs and 23 RBI’s. Story has the power to hit one not only out of the park for home runs, but extra base hits as well. He has smacked 12 doubles and 2 triples.
When Story is on base, he is a threat to steal. Story has stolen 8 bases this year. He has been caught 4 times. The best part of Story’s game is his defense. He has been part of 49 double plays and 116 infield assists. Story sometimes rushes to throw the ball to a bag and those are errors with 10.
The Rockies need to move on from Story. Colorado is rebuilding and why not deal Story to a team that is in a position to win now. He is scheduled to be a free agent once the year is over. Even if he is a rental player for the end of the year, at least Story can help a franchise make a run in the playoffs maybe even win a World Series ring.
According to MSN.com, Denver Post Colorado Rockies writer Patrick Saunders said, “From what I’ve been told, the Rockies have no plans to trade Story prior to the All-Star Game in Denver. … In my opinion, owner Dick Monfort is hesitant to trade Story now because of the lingering fallout from the Nolan Arenado trade. Monfort wants to see how this team develops through the All-Star break. Plus, with Bill Schmidt taking over as the interim general manager, the Rockies are still constructing their long-term game plan. Finally, just because the Rockies are looking to trade Story, that doesn’t mean other teams are willing to give the Rockies what they want. At least not yet.”
The trade deadline is July 30th. Colorado should deal Story now. By the time the deadline is here, the value may not be as high. If they wait, Colorado may not get what they want. Why not send Story to a winning ball club now? All it takes is a phone call to work out a deal. If dealt now, Story has 4 months of baseball in a city rather than 2. Of course, Colorado will do what they think is best for them, but Story is going to be on another team even if it is at the deadline or this winter.
