This Date In Sports History: Florida Marlins Experience First Loss In Franchise History

By Jordan Long

The Florida Marlins played their first season back in 1993.  They won their first game in franchise history 6-3 over the L.A. Dodgers at home which occurred on April 5th, 1993.  The next day, Florida lost for the 1st time in franchise history.

The Marlins hosted the Dodgers looking to start 2-0.   On the hill for them that day was Jack Armstrong.  For the Dodgers they tabbed Ramon Martinez.  Florida drew first blood on a Orestes Destrade single in the 1st inning.

The Dodgers responded with a run in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead.  Florida fought back to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Unfortunately, Florida couldn’t score anymore while L.A. added one more run in the 7th to make the final score 4-2.

The losing pitcher for Florida ended up being Jack Armstrong who lasted 6.1 innings giving up 4 runs all of them earned while striking out 4.  For the Dodgers, Martinez earned the victory.  He pitched 6 innings.  He allowed 2 runs both of them earned.  Todd Worrell saved the game for the Dodgers in the 9th even though he allowed 2 hits but the Marlins couldn’t score on him.  This evened up both teams’ record at 1-1.

The Dodgers finished the 1993 season at 81-81, 4th in the National League West division, missing the playoffs for the 5th straight year.  That streak would be halted in 1995, making the National League Division Series but were swept by the Reds.

For Florida, they barely missed losing 100 games in their inaugural season with a record of 64-98.  They earned their first playoff birth in 1997 and went all the way to the World Series.  They beat the Cleveland Indians in game 7 of that year for their first World Series title and earned a 2nd one in 2003.  Florida changed their name to the Miami Marlins in 2012.
