Time For The Broncos To Make A Change At Quarterback

By Jordan Long

On Sunday, the Denver Broncos were shutout by the Los Angeles Chargers 21 to 0, evening up their record at 3-3. It was the first time they have failed to score points since November 1992. They are now preparing to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead on Monday Night Football. The Broncos will continue with quarterback Trevor Siemian under center. According to usatoday.com Head Coach Vance Joseph said, “He can’t play well if he’s not being protected in certain spots. Now, he hasn’t been perfect, either. He can play better, absolutely. But it’s not a Trevor problem; it’s a unit problem.” It is time for the Broncos to switch quarterbacks.

The Broncos’ quarterback since the start of the season has been Trevor Siemian. He has tossed for 1,471 yards so far this year and 8 touchdowns, not a bad number but not great either. It hasn’t been all his fault. The offensive line is not allowing him time to throw the football, but that is not an excuse. On Sunday, Siemian had a total of 207 yards passing, 1 interception and was sacked 5 times.

Siemian is not able to throw the football quickly. When he holds onto the football it allows the defense to cover the receivers. When his receivers are covered, he doesn’t throw the football away and is sacked with a total of 22. If he isn’t sacked, he takes a big hit after he flings the ball. Siemian can’t seem to read the defense with 7 interceptions thrown.

The Broncos have a quarterback who can lead this football team in Brock Osweiler. They know what he can do since Osweiler started 7 games in the 2015 season going 5-2. Osweiler can read the defenses and checks off into a better play. He may throw the football quickly to his receivers to avoid getting hit or sacked. The offensive line play might be improved in front of Osweiler.

The Broncos season isn’t over yet. They are 3-3. The problem is if they don’t make a switch at quarterback in the next few weeks, the year could be over. The Broncos must make a change now while they are still in a playoff position. If they don’t, it could be a long offseason with questions still at quarterback.

What do you think of the Broncos struggles at quarterback this season? Is it time to make a change?
