The four teams in the College Football Playoff are set. #1 Clemson takes on #4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl while #2 Alabama faces #3 Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl. This is the second year for the College Football Playoff. Is it time to expand the playoff?
Last year was the first College Football Playoff. Ohio State won the whole thing. The four teams in it were Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State. The committee left out two Big 12 teams, TCU and Baylor as they shared the Big 12 title. These two teams felt they should have been in the playoffs.
This year was easier because Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma won their conference titles. Four teams are still not enough to decide who should win a National title. According to ESPN, Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly said “If you look at the first eight, that would be a pretty good playoff. Everybody would be excited about it.”
A four team playoff is still a playoff. Sure all it means is that the winner has two games to win a title which was better than the BCS where they had to win one game. The playoffs have been a success because teams get to play to prove who should be number one. Last season Ohio State was the last team in at #4 and went all the way to win the National title.
Expanding the playoffs would allow for more upsets. All they would have to do is have teams that have won conference championships be in. There are 10 conferences so they could have ten teams in the playoffs. Colleges wouldn’t feel left out by a committee. Two teams would get a bye into the second round. Those would be the highest ranked teams. Then, there would be four games to decide a national championship. College football would have real playoffs, might see rankings higher, and more TV revenue for the schools. It would be a win for everybody involved.
What do you think of expanding the college football playoffs?
