The College Football Playoff is set. The 4 teams in are Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama. The committee left out Ohio State and Wisconsin. All of these teams are deserving of a playoff spot. It is time to expand the playoffs to 8 teams.
The committee tried to have the 4 best teams in College Football in the playoffs. They did that, but Ohio State, who won the Big 10 Championship, was left out all together.
The easiest way to expand is to use the 5 conference champions from the ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac-12, SEC, and 3 at large bids. Using that formula not only gives college football the best 8 teams but might provide for better matchups. The top teams wouldn’t be left out. Using this formula this season the playoff teams would be USC, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, and Wisconsin. The committee can rank them by the standings.
The 1st-round should be at the site of the school that is ranked higher. The winners will go to the semifinal where the bowl game is and the loser should go to a lesser bowl game. The playoffs would then be the way they are now with the semifinals on New Years’ Day.
The biggest factor in all this is money. Networks receive money from advertisers and schools obtain it by participating. Expanding the playoffs may help ESPN, or whatever network they choose to show them on, have ratings spike due to more playoff teams. Schools will still collect with ticket sales and their team being on the major network. It is a win for everybody.
College football needs to take a hard look at increasing the number of playoff teams. 4 teams aren’t enough and 8 teams seem like the perfect amount. Hopefully soon college football and their committee will expand the playoff.
