The Colorado Rockies are 12-19 so far this season. That is the worst record in the NL West. Colorado doesn’t seem to be contending this year. Now there is speculation that star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki could be traded. Tulowitzki met with his agent, Paul Cohen, yesterday before the Rockies 5-4 win over the Dodgers. They talked about possibly demanding a trade out of Colorado. According to ESPN, Cohen said earlier in the week to the New York Post, “to say that it is not a possibility would be silly.” Troy Tulowitzki has said he isn’t looking for a trade. He said, “Anybody that knows me or has covered me for a long time, I’m pretty honest and straightforward. If I have an issue, I would take care of it myself. The last thing I would try to do is leak something and get it out there. The Rockies’ ownership and myself have always been close, so there’s no reason to try to leak something. I’d go straight to them.” If the Rockies continue to lose games, the rumors will heat up. Here are the teams who could possibly trade for Tulowitzki.
The New York Mets, for the last few years have been named in trade rumors with the Colorado Rockies. The Mets make a lot of sense. They are currently in first place at 20-15 and one and half games ahead of the Washington Nationals. Tulowitzki has played with their center fielder, Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer played the last two seasons with the Rockies before signing with the Mets. The Mets are a team that could use him in the infield. He is one of the best shortstops in the game and they have a need at that position. Tulowitzki would make an immediate impact to helping this ball club win the division.
The Padres could also use Tulowitzki. They don’t have an All-Star shortstop and he would fill that void. Rockies probably wouldn’t trade with them because they are in the NL West. They wouldn’t want to help one of their division rivals to be a better team.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are also in the running if the Rockies trade Tulowitzki. The Pirates have been to the playoffs the last two years and have shown they are a team that is contending for the playoffs. He would be reunited with Manager Clint Hurdle, who managed him from 2006 to 2009.
Another possibility is that the Colorado Rockies keep Tulowitzki. One of the problems with trading him is his contract. He is owed $113.7 million through 2020. The Colorado Rockies can build around Tulowitzki . He should be the face of the franchise for years to come. Colorado needs to spend money on pitching to help Tulowitzki and the team to become contenders who hopefully win a World Series. It would be a shame to see the Rockies trade the best shortstop in the game.
Where will Tulowitzki be traded this season? What should the Rockies do to make their team a contender?
The Monforts aren’t that smart though. We will see if they do.
