A disturbing incident occurred over the weekend during a junior college football game. Ventura College, located in Ventura, California, played host to Mt. San Antonio College from Walnut, California. Ventura College won 34-29. The game however, is not going to be remembered for the hard fought victory, but rather what happened in the third quarter.
Mt. San Antonio offensive tackle , Bernard Schirmer struck a referee. The ref had just broken up an argument between players and was hit trying to walk Schirmer back to his huddle. Schirmer was ejected and arrested on suspicion of battery.
According to ESPN, Ventura College Head Coach Steve Mooshagain said, “I shook his hand when he (the referee) was coming off, and I asked him if he was OK. He looked like he was a little drowsy.”
There is no reason whatsoever to touch a referee. They are there to call the game and make sure it is played the right way. I know emotions are high during athletics, but players need to keep their emotions in check. They can disagree with officials’ calls, but let the coaches deal with the refs. Athletes can’t let passion for the game get out of hand which, is what happened with Bernard Schirmer.
I don’t think that Schirmer should ever play football again. This was caught on film. The film doesn’t lie. Schirmer needs to be punished by the law for what he did which might be a fine, community service, or spending time in jail. This can also be a teaching moment for other coaches.
What do you think needs to happen to Bernard Schirmer?
