Untouchable Records

Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has coached his team to 1,000 wins as of Sunday. That number is going to continue to grow this year. It’s an impressive feat. He is the only coach in College Men’s Basketball to win that many games. The record may never get broken. Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim is right behind him with 962 wins. He should improve this year. There are numerous records in sports that may never get broken.

Cal Ripken Jr. has the most games started consecutively in MLB history. His streak started on May 30, 1982 and lasted until September 19, 1998, totaling 2,632 games. In today’s game, Miguel Tejada had the longest streak of 1,152 games started without missing a game. Baseball players don’t play every day anymore. Managers always let them have a day off. This streak will never be broken.

Baseball players are excited if they have a 20 game hitting streak. That is remarkable but that’s not even half of the MLB record for a hitting streak. 74 years ago, in 1941, Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 straight games. Jimmy Rollins who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers had a streak of 38 which started at the end of 2005 and went into the 2006 season.

In 1962 Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in an NBA game. Players in the NBA are happy if they score 50 points in a game. Kobe Bryant tried to break Chamberlain’s record in 2006 but only scored 81 points. Chamberlain’s record should stand for all-time because basketball is such a team game.

Today in the NBA, teams usually score close to 200 combined points. Back in 1983, the Detroit Pistons and the Denver Nuggets played in the highest scoring game. It was a 186-184 win for the Pistons. 370 points were scored in this game.   The NBA then was an up-tempo fast break game. Today it’s half-court style making for lower scoring games. This record won’t be broken.

Emmitt Smith is the leader in most yards rushed in an NFL career. His career spanned from 1990 to 2004. He rushed for 18,355 yards. When Emmitt Smith was playing football it was a one back system. Today’s NFL is a multi-back system.   Steven Jackson has 11,388 career yards rushing and counting. It might be a while until we see a runner who will surpass Emmitt Smith.

In the NHL, Wayne Gretzky has all the major records. These include most points and goals in a career. He also has the record for goals in one season. Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals in the 1981-82 season. Scoring 50 is a great accomplishment but 92 is unheard of. Brett Hull scored 86 goals in 1990-91 season. It will be hard to break the record of 92 goals. Gretzky lit the lamp 864 times. The only player today who is close to this is Jarome Iginla with 574 goals. These are just a few of the amazing records Wayne Gretzky holds in the NHL.
