Vance Joseph Not A Fit For The Denver Broncos’ Head Coaching Vacancy

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos have already interviewed Atlanta Falcons’ Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Kansas City Chiefs’ Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub for the team’s head coaching position. Tomorrow the Denver Broncos will meet with Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Joseph is the favorite for the job opening.

The Denver Broncos are familiar with Joseph. When the Broncos hired Gary Kubiak two years ago as head coach, they wanted Joseph as defensive coordinator. Joseph at the time was the defensive backs coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals knew how valuable he was and decided to keep him for another year. The Broncos instead hired Wade Phillips. This past year Joseph was the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.

Joseph’s defense was poor this past season. They gave up 23.8 points, 382.6 yards, and 242.2 passing yards per game. The one area they struggled in all season was stopping the run, giving up 140.4 rushing yards, ranking 30th in the league. They still made the playoffs as the 6th seed.

In Sunday’s Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins had a difficult time stopping the Steelers running game. They gave up 179 yards on the ground with an average per carry of 5.1 yards. It was one of the reasons the Steelers scored 30 points on this Dolphins’ defense.

The Broncos shouldn’t hire Joseph. He wasn’t a great defensive coordinator this past season. It showed during the playoff game. The Broncos have a Super Bowl defense but they need a coach who will help them stop the run. Joseph is not the man who will do that. In the end Elway will decide who the best candidate is for the Broncos job opening.

How do you feel about Vance Joseph as a possibility for the next Denver Broncos coach?
