The Denver Broncos are preparing to take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. They look to end their 2-game losing streak. Denver is thin at wide receiver and agreed to sign John Brown to the practice squad.
The Broncos are already down K.J. Hamler who is out for the season with a torn ACL. Jerry Jeudy could be back in the next few weeks dealing with a high ankle sprain. The Broncos’ receivers left on the active roster are Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, Kendall Hinton, Diontae Spencer, and David Moore. On the practice squad before this signing was Tyrie Cleveland, Seth Williams, De’Mornay Pierson-El, and Rico Gafford. Denver hasn’t called them up yet.
The Broncos knew they wanted to add another veteran receiver to the mix. Brown brings talent to the table. Denver hopes Brown can eventually make the team because they need a slot receiver to take over for Helmer.
Brown is a 7-year NFL veteran. He previously played for the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, and the Buffalo Bills. Last season he suited up for the Bills. He caught 33 passes for 458 yards and 3 touchdowns. His average yards per catch was 13.9. Despite the pretty reasonable year, Buffalo decided to let him go.
Brown has been waiting for a call to be back on an NFL roster. He was with the Raiders during the preseason, but was cut before the year started. Brown brings NFL experience to the team. Brown has caught 320 footballs for 4,748 yards, and 31 touchdowns.
Denver is expected to call him up sometime this year and it could be next week. When Jeudy is healthy he will be lined up on the opposite side of Sutton leaving Brown to be the slot receiver. Bridgewater should be able to find him. His speed will allow him to be open and to have defenders miss him in the open field for long gains which could be first downs or touchdowns.
The Broncos are eager for Brown to help the receiving core. This is a much needed move. Hopefully, Brown is the answer for the team if and when he is called up.
