Vic Fangio Earns His First NFL Head Coaching Job With The Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have their new Head Coach.  The job had been open since they decided to fire Vance Joseph on December 31st, after 2 disappointing years.  Joseph’s overall record with the Broncos was an unimpressive 11-21, a winning percentage of .344.  The Broncos took their time and interviewed coaches who had experience in the league.  It came down to Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line coach Mike Munchak and Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.  In the end the Broncos went with Fangio.

Fangio has plenty of football knowledge to bring to the Mile High City.  He has coached in the NFL since 1986.  The last two years, Fangio was the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.  Chicago was one of the top defenses in the league this year.  They didn’t allow teams to score many points at 17.7 points per game, ranking 1st in the NFL.   Teams had a tough time gaining yards, averaging 299.7 yards per game ranking 3rd in the NFL.  The Bears rush defense was the best in the NFL giving up 80 yards per game.

Fangio called a lot of plays where his defense pressured the quarterback.  Opposing quarterbacks had to throw the ball before they wanted to or they would be sacked.  The Bears ranked 3rd in the league in sacks with 50.  They also forced 27 interceptions, the most in the NFL.

Denver is hoping Fangio can produce the same type of numbers next season with the Broncos.  Fangio will have plenty of playmakers on the Broncos defense.  He will need to help Von Miller and Bradley Chubb rush the quarterback more, which may end up in sacks.   Those pressures could end up in interceptions for cornerback Chris Harris.

Denver knows what kind of coach Fangio is.  They are hoping he will stay in Denver for a long time.  The Broncos gave him a 4-year contract with a 5th year option.   That should be enough time for him to turn the Broncos back into a winner.
