The Colorado Rockies ended this year with a record of 68-94, a two game improvement from last year. Even with the poor record, the Rockies decided to bring back Manager Walt Weiss for the 2016 season. Is this the right decision?
The Colorado Rockies hired Walt Weiss November 8th, 2012. This was a month after Jim Tracy resigned as the Manager. The only experience Weiss had as a Manager was in high school with Regis Jesuit High School. His first season, 2013, the Rockies had a 74-88 record. This isn’t a bad record but it’s certainly not great. The last two years Colorado only won 134 games and lost 190. Weiss is 208-278 with the Rockies.
On Tuesday he met with General Manager Jeff Bridich to discuss the 2015 season. According to the Denverpost.com Jeff Bridich said, “Walt and I met for several hours (Tuesday) about the season and how we can get better with him back in 2016. It’s going well and we will continue to meet.”
ESPN stated that Weiss said, “I’m encouraged by some of pieces we have in place. I feel good about where we are headed. We have some ground to cover, but I feel good about it.”
The Colorado Rockies are making the right choice by bringing back Walt Weiss. The athletes on the Rockies love playing for him, even though the results haven’t been there. Weiss has one more year left on his contract. If the Rockies start to fall in the standings next year, they could fire Weiss in mid-season.
Batting was never a problem for this team this season. Colorado as a team batted .265 which was 5th in the league. They could use another bat in the lineup to make this offense even more potent.
The area the Colorado Rockies struggled in was pitching. Their team ERA was 5.04 which was last in all of Major League Baseball. The Rockies had the offense but the fact was they couldn’t pitch. If teams don’t have pitching they won’t make the postseason. The Rockies must find a way to fix their bullpen and starting pitching. Once they improve that, they could win more games and put some confidence in this team to do something special. Rockies must address this problem in the off-season.
What do you think of the Rockies bringing back Walt Weiss for another season?
