The Washington Football Team is going to face the L.A. Rams on Sunday. Washington looks to improve on their 1-3 record. When they take the field, a new quarterback will be under center, Kyle Allen.
Dwayne Haskins who has been the Washington starter was a rookie last year. He finished with a 2-5 record passing for 1,365 yards and 7 touchdowns. Haskins couldn’t read defenses and made rookie mistakes by tossing the football into double coverage. Those passes were picked off totaling 7 interceptions. Washington’s offensive line was not protecting him and he was sacked 29 times, far too many.
This season Washington brought in a new Head Coach, Ron Rivera. Washington expected Haskins to have better results under Rivera. It hasn’t worked yet. Haskins totaled 939 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. He chucked 3 interceptions.
It hasn’t been all his fault. His line hasn’t been able to protect him. It seems every time he drops back to pass, he is blitzed and Haskins has to run for his life totaling 13 sacks.
The last straw came last week in the 31-17 loss against the Baltimore Ravens. Haskins passed for 314 yards, didn’t record a touchdown but was sacked 3 times.
According to ESPN, after the defeat, Rivera said, “It’s a tough situation. We’re looking at our circumstances right now as a football team. We’re in a very interesting situation right now.”
Washington decided it was time for a switch at quarterback. They will go with Kyle Allen. Allen was traded from Carolina to Washington on March 23, 2020. He had played under Rivera from 2018 to 2019.
Allen started 13 games for the Panthers. His record was 6-7. He totaled 3,588 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Washington is eager to see what Allen can do this week. If he plays well, even in the loss, he could be the starter next week. Otherwise, it could be back to the drawing board for Washington. They may have to go back to Haskins.
