The Green Bay Packers were eliminated in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers by the score of 13-10. Green Bay doesn’t know what quarterback Aaron Rodgers will do this offseason but wide receiver Devonte Adams is a free agent. Their top priority will be to re-sign Adams.
Adams finished his 8th NFL season all with the Green Bay Packers. This year was his best year in the league. He totaled 123 catches for 1,553 yards, all career highs. Adams also added 11 touchdowns. Rodgers trusted Adams to hold onto the football and gain yards. When he beat the defensive back for a catch, those were for first downs or longer. His longest reception this year was 59 yards. His yards per catch was an impressive 12.6. Adams protected the football and didn’t fumble.
In the Packers’ playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Adams was targeted 11 times and was able to haul in 9 passes for 90 yards. He didn’t score a touchdown but he was able to move the chains for the Packers’ offense.
Now that the Packers are in the offseason they would like to sign Adams. According to CBSsports.com, Head Coach Matt LaFleur said, “We kind of talked everything through and, again, another guy that we’re hopeful that we can come to an agreement with. Obviously, he’s done so much on the field, but I think it’s still the stuff that you all don’t get to see within the meeting room, with how he talks to his teammates, with how he sets a standard for everybody, there’s a reason he was voted a captain, rightfully so. He earned that.”
The Packers know agreeing to a new deal with Adams is key in helping Aaron Rogers decide to stay in Green Bay. Adams is Rodgers’ favorite target. Rodgers could opt out of his contract since there is an option in his current deal making him a free agent.
For Adams, he is going to do what is best for him moving forward. He might look at all of his options first. Adams may test the free agent market to see what his value is. Then again Green Bay could slap the franchise tag on him. This would allow Green Bay to work on a long-term contract with the receiver. Of course, this all depends on what Rogers decides to do. If Rodgers leaves, then they will go with Jordan Love under center but he still needs a playmaker. That is what Adams will provide.
