Zach Mettenberger Heads To San Diego, Reunites With Ken Whisenhunt

The Tennessee Titans decided earlier this week to cut quarterback Zach Mettenberger. Mettenberger has been on the Titans roster the last two seasons, serving as the backup quarterback.

The Titans drafted Mettenberger in the 6th round of the 2014 NFL draft. He appeared in seven games in 2014 throwing for 1,412 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Tennessee finished that year at 2-14, tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the worst record in the league. The Titans had the number two pick in the NFL draft and selected Marcus Mariota.

Mariota was expected to start the 2015 season with Mettenberger in the role of the backup. Mettenberger ended up playing in seven games last season throwing for 935 yards, with 4 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. In his two-year NFL career he has a total of 2,347 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

This offseason, the Titans wanted a veteran backup quarterback to Marcus Mariota and signed Matt Cassel who has played in the NFL for 12 seasons. He is a seasoned veteran who could backup Marcus Mariota. The Titans were pondering the possibility of keeping Mettenberger to compete for the backup job. In the end they decided it was time to move on.

The San Diego Chargers claimed Mettenberger, reuniting him with Ken Whisenhunt on Tuesday. Whisenhunt is the Chargers new offensive coordinator and drafted Mettenberger when he was the head coach of the Titans in 2014.

This seems like a reasonable signing because he is a veteran quarterback. Mettenberger will have a chance to prove he should be the backup to Philip Rivers. The Chargers need to work with him on not turning the football over and reading defenses. Mettenberger holds onto the football too long which has equaled interceptions and fumbles. The Chargers will have to teach him to throw the football quicker so he won’t get the football knocked off his hand for a turnover. Hopefully, he can stay with the Chargers this year as the backup.

What do you think of the Chargers signing Zach Mettenberger?
